TRIP REPORT: Show trip details

Hills: Ben Rinnes
Date: Sunday 10th Jan 09
Distance: 7.2km
Time: 3 1/2hrs
Who: Rach_hill and Gedi

My 1st attempt at a Trip Report...... Shocked

After what has felt like months being snow bound and much discussion in the morning, we decided to try and make it to our local hill. The frustration of not being able to spend time in the hills combined with the clear skies proved to be too big a temptation!

Crampons? - check
Sarnies? - check
Tea? - check
Cake? - you better believe it!
Shovel? - oops!
Thank goodness for the kindness of the Snow Boarder who let us use his shovel. Nothing like digging your car into the parking space for a gentle warm up Embarassed

After half an hour of digging, wheel spinning and some more digging we finally got started.

Not many walkers but some skiers left a handy trail which we followed to get our first view of the summit.

As we came over Roy's Hill we saw two skiers and their dog. Would we see a ski-ing dog?

Our normal one hour to the summit was fast approaching as the deep snow was hard work but made worthwhile as we soaked up the views of Tap o Noth

The Buck of Cabrach

Managed to capture the skier and his dog.

Nearly there! This was the first time we'd climbed Rinnes in the snow. My school is not far from the Ben and we sometimes pop up after work and I couldn't believe it was taking me so long to summit! All I could think about at this point was tea and cake.

It was a bit windy!

Great cake and even better views. Won't be long til the sun goes down.

It was bitterly cold with little shelter. As we made our way down, the wind abated enough for us to enjoy the stunning sunset.

That's my man Rolling Eyes

Sun setting towards the west. Just lovely!

Still smiling Very Happy

As we reached the car just before dark we were glad we made the effort!

What a heap of snow, and that's just on the approach road. All those distinctive rocks on the top seemed smothered by it. Excellent TR made even more so by the fact that it was your first, without (as far as I know) any computer rage at all.

Well done on your first TR, all seemed well with it with no missing pictures or a message at the bottom saying 'edited 10 times'
The snow does slow you down doesnt it, my speed drops by 40-50% going by my walking times of late.

That was brilliant and quite the best TR I've seen of this hill - well done for doing it in that much snow.Very Happy Terrific debut. Cool

I've lost count of how many times I've been up this hill, with the majority of ascents done in winter - the north side can be interesting then!

Thanks for that. I visited the hill a few summers ago. What a transformation!
Looks like no passing places on the approach road. Any road rage to get you warmed up for the digging the parking space? Twisted Evil
