TRIP REPORT: Show trip details

Hills: Carn an Righ and Beinn Iutharn Mhor
Date: Thur 10th Sept, 2009
Attendees: Just me
Weather: Mostly dry with some sunshine to finish with.
Time: 7hrs (5 ¼ walking and 1 ¾ cycling)

Having checked out the forecast I decided on Thursday to take the day off work and head up to Inverey to tackle Carn an Righ and Beinn Iutharn Mhor by a route not previously covered on the site (I think !!).

Due to having to be back to take our 13year old to her gymnastics class for 5pm it was an early start leaving the house at 5am. Drove up to Inverey and was on the bike and moving quite slowly if truth be told as I hadn’t been on the bike for about a year and the muscles required took a wee while to warm up.

Moon still up there as daylight arrives

Creag an Fhuathais from the bridge over the Ey Burn

Got to the old lodge at Altanour in an hour and was glad to get off the bike and start walking.

Looking back at Altanour from the start of the walk

Beinn Iutharn Mhor still had some mist swirling around and it was to be after reaching Carn an Righ two and a half hours later that it would clear to give good views all around.

Headed southwest on the path and instead of following this around to Loch nan Eun I headed up to the corrie between Beinn Iutharn Bheag and Beinn Iutharn Mhor. After about one and a half km, up beside the burn I headed left to join the ridge between Beinn Iutharn Bheag and Mam nan Carn. It was then an easy stroll up to Mam nan Carn’s summit.

Moving southwest it was a fairly steep descent down to the start of the path up Carn an Righ.

Only 35 minutes from the bottom and I was on the summit and it was still only 10am. I had a cheese bagel and some coffee before I headed down as the mist started to clear. By this time I was confident of getting back in time to get the wee one to her class so relaxed a little.

There is a fine path which contours round Mam nan Carn but it peters out in the corrie but the easy grassy slopes were soon behind as I reached the ridge. From here it was about 150m climb to the summit of Beinn Iutharn Mhor which was reached 3 hours 50mins from leaving the bike.

The views from here were quite extensive but the light was quite poor as can be seen for the pictures. It was a fine walk around the ridge to the cairn at the top of the ‘nose’ and from here a steep descent took me back to the outward route, and back to the bike in 5 and ¼ hours.

Looking back round the ridge to the summit

Loch Vrotachan and the Glenshee hills

The descent doesn’t look that steep, but it was

The cycle out was very enjoyable mainly because of seeing a black Spitfire which came round into the glen from the Glenshee side then over my head and round to the right of Beinn Iutharn Mhor away towards the Cairngorms. This is the second time I’ve seen this the last time being in the Lairig Ghru about 7 years ago. It was too quick for me to get my camera out which was a shame. Has anyone else seen this plane on their travels?

Back to the car at 1:30 and home with time for a soak in the bath before taxi duties commenced.

A great day on the hills and after finishing with plenty of time to spare I wish I had made the 30min detour to climb Beinn Iutharn Bheag, never mind a good excuse to go back some day.

Great report and some nice pictures there. The black Spitfire may have

been a Tocano fighter pilot training aircraft, these fly out of RAF Leuchars

quite often. The Tocano can be mistaken for older aircrafts sound and

shape. Trainee pilots fly these before moving onto Hawks (the same

aircraft flown by the Red Arrows) before then

flying Tornados or Typhoons(Eurofighters).

Interesting variation, grand walking area eh. Enjoyed that, there was a spitfire at the Leuchars air show yesterday, maybe it was that one.
